Legal Department
The Legal Department works to protect the rights, sovereignty, and self-governance of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. Guided by the Tribe’s Covenant, the Department provides legal advice and support to the Tribal Council, Departments, and Enterprises, helping ensure that Tribal decisions and programs are grounded in law and aligned with the Tribe’s long-term vision.

Led by the Attorney General, the Department works in partnership with other governments within Ktunaxa Territory and beyond, including fellow Ktunaxa governments, other Indigenous Nations, and the federal, state, provincial, and local governments of the United States and Canada, to promote Ktunaxa values and strengthen government-to-government relationships. The Legal Department also maintains and updates the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Law and Order Code.
